Top tips for staying secure when using my tablet to connect to the internet

The Internet is growing bigger and better by the minute and is a massive necessity to those that use the likes of tablets, laptops and mobile phones.

The Internet offers a wealth of possibilities: it allows you to surf a vast amount of web pages, speak to friends half way across the globe, watch movies on the go, and much more besides.

If the Internet were to suddenly collapse, a number of businesses would probably go into ‘shut down’ mode, causing chaos to the daily running of certain services. However, this is very unlikely and more and more are choosing to use the Internet on a daily basis. If you ask yourself this question ‘when was the last time I didn’t use the Internet?’ you may be unable to give an answer. This is mainly because most individuals cannot go a minute without checking their phones, sending emails, making calls and surfing the web.

In fact, it is now possible to complete a huge number of tasks without leaving the house. Such tasks include completing the weekly shop, buying an outfit for an upcoming event, buying gadgets, reading news reports, and discovering ways in which to recycle or sell MacBook devices and other laptops.

Finding a secure connection

If you wish to complete such tasks online, finding a secure connection is imperative. If you have a Wi-Fi connection in your own home, make sure that it is a locked connection. Other users are able to access Wi-Fi from up to 1,000 feet away, which means an unlocked Internet network is a target for techno-thieves. Once inside this connection, computer hackers will be able to peruse your content at ease, ranging from music to pictures. Another way to stop this from happening is to put a lock on any shared servers.

If you choose to connect to public Wi-Fi, it is important that you issue the same lock on files, photos, music and personal documents. This will put a stop to strangers viewing personal items. Many cafes, restaurants, bars, airports and public shopping centers feature free Wi-Fi, which means accessing the Internet has never been easier. But it also makes it easier for computer hackers to get into such systems, which is why you should do everything in your power to protect your assets. Without protection you could fall victim to fraud and you may even end up sharing personal details without consent – which is why you should never enter your credit card details in a public place. If you must, ensure your bank offers a high level of fraud prevention.
